About me
Author, Arab linguist, Publisher and a leading figure in the field of Localization and making information technology accessible to Arab technology users everywhere. Despite being trained as an economist with an MSC from Brigham Young University he returned to the Middle East to work for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the Chief Arabic Translator for the church in the Middle East translating over 30 books and directing the localization of other church literature into the Arabic language. During the same period, Jabra started writing a weekly column on information technology trends for the "Star", a weekly English magazine published in Amman, Jordan. Later, Jabra worked for the first localized Arabic version of the American BYTE magazine published by McGraw-Hill. During his work for BYTE Jabra was the "Java champion" and predicted accurately that Java applications will be ubiquitous on the desktop and among programmers. In 1998 Jabra became Managing Editor of the localized Arabic version of the prestigious Windows User Magazine, and later as the Managing Editor of Internet Arab World. During that period Jabra wrote hundreds of articles on technology in the Arab world, predicted the rise of the Linux operating system and championed the cause of Open Source software in the Arab world. After 9/11/2001 Jabra moved back to the United Stated where he worked as a consultant with America Online Time Warner and later as a Language Training Consultant to the US Navy where he developed breakthrough curriculum for language training in the US military reducing language acquisition time by 45%. Education 1993 MSc Applied Mathematical Economics, Brigham Young University Provo, UT 1989 BA Economics & Finance, Yarmouk University Irbid, Jordan Experience - Produced over 30 localization kits. Developed Arabic translation and localization guidelines for print and web-based publications, including a four-stage translation cycle (translation, content review, language review, and final edits). Authored unified terminology lists to achieve complete consistency and the highest quality. Collaborated with Microsoft Saudi Arabia to develop a unified terminology list for Microsoft products. Coined new terminology in Arabic to describe emerging technologies used industry-wide today.
- Managed the Arabic localization and production of proprietary CAT and translation memory tools for translation of religious texts including the translation of interface elements, documentation, testing and implementing final product.
- Designed user-friendly, localized Arabic interfaces for web-based content management systems and applications to manage subscriber databases. Designed Arabic fonts for use in publications and applications.
- Managed monthly staff testing and reviews of approximately 40 new hardware and software products (enterprise, SMB, and consumer) primarily for the Microsoft Windows platform. Produced written editorial and reviews. Integrated with software engineers and product managers from Microsoft Saudi Arabia and Novell Middle East as BETA Tester of Microsoft products including Windows ME/2000/XP, Office XP, Frontpage, .NET, Netware and GroupWise.
- Worked extensively with software engineers to develop localized editions of web-based content management & syndication systems for local and pan-Arab publishing houses. Discussed client’s project specifications, developed consistent and unified translations for interface elements, produced language reviews of content, managed pilots and prototypes, communicated client feedback to software developers, and aided in implementing final product at client’s site. Implemented localized updates to clients’ applications.
- Worked closely with IBM software engineers on developing and implementing a prototype of an Arabic web-based text-to-speech component embedded in a content syndication solution. Provided translations into Arabic of interface elements and documentation.
- Interviewed consumers, resellers, product managers, marketing managers, software engineers, public relations managers, and regional managers of international technology companies for publications related to technology and the Middle East region.
- Published over 150 articles on emerging technologies such as open-source software, Java, .NET, XML, UIML, XUL, XAML and other innovations. Wrote two books dealing with e-government and e-learning solutions targeting Middle Eastern Arabic users.
- Designed work processes to aid geographically dispersed translation teams using team collaboration features in MS Office productivity tools including Microsoft Office, Novell GroupWise and Microsoft Project.
- Provided services for various clients working on large and small projects for NATO, Legal Counsel in Saddam Hussein's case, NYC Department of Education, California Department of Agriculture, and US Attorney's offices.
